PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Project Description: Untamed Pink – Commission for the DeBartolo Family
Untamed Pink is a monumental site-specific artwork inspired and created for Candy DeBartolo and the DeBartolo family, measuring 18 feet in length by 48 inches in height. Crafted from luminous blue mirrored acrylic, the installation reflects and refracts its environment, creating a dynamic dialogue between architecture, light, and color. The reflective surface becomes both a mirror and a canvas — merging the physical presence of the viewer with the energy of the painting itself.
Process
To achieve the sweeping abstract composition, artist Mishou Sánchez hand-built an oversized Japanese Shodō brush, inspired by the centuries-old tradition of calligraphic performance painting. With this tool, she executed gestural strokes across the acrylic surface, fusing discipline and spontaneity into a single motion. The paints were made entirely from pure pigments, custom-mixed to achieve a heightened vibrancy and material depth.
Concept & Outcome
The result is a powerful convergence of cultural tradition, contemporary abstraction, and technical innovation. At once meditative and energetic, the piece captures a moment of performance — the live gesture preserved as a lasting installation.
Medium & Fabrication
Blue mirrored acrylic panel; custom pure-pigment paints; hand-built Shodō brush. Dimensions: 18 ft (L) × 48 in (H). The mirror finish activates the surrounding architecture and viewers, turning reflection into part of the composition.
Collection & Installation
Commissioned by the DeBartolo Family Foundation and permanently installed at The Sacred Pepper in Tampa, Florida, Untamed Pink stands as a testament to the family’s commitment to supporting ambitious, transformative art. The work was a major undertaking, both in scale and process, and has become a celebrated centerpiece, embodying boldness, creativity, and a shared vision for innovation in the arts.
